Looking for live/work in Oakland

I might soon find telecommute work and I would like to find an inexpensive place to live/work in Oakland. I lived at such a place in Denver, CO for about 3 years and I loved it--someplace where you can play live music, practice space and be around artistic people. Must have broadband. Is live/work dead in Oakland?
